Instagram could follow in Twitter’s footsteps and update the account verification tool to be paid.
According to information with the technology blog TechCrunch, some references in the application’s code point to this happening soon.
Everything points to the fact that the social network will charge its users to access the coveted blue badge.
By changing this function, Instagram would be doing the same as Twitter Blue, which implemented the payment of a subscription to be verified.
What is known about instagram account verification
Alessandro Paluzzi, engineer and developer, often tells all the secrets of applications. In a tweet he unveiled that Instagram would be preparing a «paid blue badge» and a new paid subscription product.
Presumably this code refers to the blue check marks that verified users get on the platform. FB and IG stand for Facebook and Instagram, which could mean that Meta is thinking about verifying users for a fee across all platforms. IDV, as TechCrunch notes, is a well-known acronym for «identity verification.» Paluzzi has discovered numerous unreleased features in the past, including a BeReal-like feature and in-app scheduler on Instagram.
In addition, Paluzzi also discovered code that references a new type of subscription, although it is unclear if it is directly related to paid verification.
In this way, paid verification would solve the problem of limiting the badge to a few and could expand to Facebook with the same payment. Meta may go further and offer an ad-free subscription model, something Twitter is already considering. For now these are just rumors, as outside of a few lines of code, there are no other references to this version.
