Google has announced that it is rolling out an update that would make file sharing in Drive more secure.
After the update is released on September 13, Drive adds a resource key to links generated for sharing. What this means is that those who viewed the link before the changes can continue to access it.
However, those who do not will need the resource key to access the file.
Google Drive Update
Workspace administrators have until July 23 to decide how the security update will be applied to their organization.
They can choose to apply it with limitations or opt out completely.
For their part, personal users will receive a notification about the change starting July 26 and have until September 13 to make a decision.
They can also opt out of the update, however; Google makes it clear in its review that the option is not recommended. The company suggests that you do not apply the update only to publicly published files.
The tech giant will also implement changes for youtube; where it could break a lot of older links.
YouTube has a security measure that makes links to unlisted videos hard to find for people they have not been shared with; but it was only launched in 2017.
As of July 23, all unlisted videos uploaded before 2017; will be private unless users opt out.
