30 years since the first website was created

30 años primera página web

Today we think that the www has been with us all our lives, but no, web pages are barely three decades old.

On August 6, 1991, a London computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee made the official announcement of the World Wide Web and distributed the first web server software, marking the debut of this tool as a public service on the Internet and changing history forever.

30 years since the first web page

This website can still be visited as if it were an archaeological piece, it is almost like enjoying an ancient sculpture in a museum. The site functions as a sort of guide on how to create websites, the tools that can be used and other useful information.

Wikipedia says about the history of this first website: «Using concepts from his earlier hypertext systems such as ENQUIRE; British physicist Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist and at the time an employee of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN); now director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), wrote a proposal in March 1989 for what would become the World Wide Web. The proposal turned out to be intended as a communication system for CERN but Berners-Lee eventually realized that the concept could be applied worldwide. Together with Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau, Berners-Lee proposed in 1990 to use hypertext; ‘to link and access information of various kinds as a network of nodes that the user can navigate at will.»

However, it took a few more years before the WWW really entered the mainstream and was no longer the domain of scientists and computer enthusiasts. Today, the WWW has more than 1.8 billion pages.

Berners-Lee continues to work on the future of the web and expresses this on a regular basis. The 65-year-old scientist is currently working on the Solid project; where data is stored decentralized instead of on centralized platforms.

The original source code of the WWW was recently auctioned off selling 4.6 million euros as a non fungible token (NFT).
